A green-patina bronze statue of a woman wearing a long dress, and a scarf on her head, facing forward with her head held high on an elongated neck. Her right clenched hand is resting on her forward-bent right knee. Her left foot, heel raised, and left hand, holding a book, are behind her. The statue is mounted to a 1" high black lacquered wood platform
Part of the 13-piece series of sculptures of African American heroes created by Inge Ruth Hardison called "Negro Giants in History." The sculpture was gifted to the Sewall-Belmont House by the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc. in New York. The installation ceremony took place on June 16, 1995.
